Danby Wood

A Norwich Fringe Project site. The wood is itself of little dragonfly interest, but supplies the car park for trips to marston marshes. Should you be coming by bus you want a 10,10A or 18, Zone2 (stop after the maid marion pub). Species recorded here are mainly vagrants from the marsh but include Brown, Migrant and Southern Hawkers and Common Darter.

The wood is on the site of an old chalk pit and consists of fairly open woodland, good for warblers, tits, woodpeckers and treecreepers. A fairly good site for wild flowers and some interesting fungi (look for the impressive growth of bracket fungi on the large log by the car park)

This is an excellent wood for small children and dogs to run around in, but being based on a chalk pit it contains steep banks and you should wait till you reach the bottom before letting either off the leash!

Directions

From the inner ring road, turn into the Ipswich road going out of Norwich. Just after the petrol station and before reaching the Holiday Inn, turn to your right into Marston Lane. The free but small car park is to your right, just after the allotments on your left. Note that car crime is a problem here - don't leave valuables showing!
